As a FINTRAC-regulated exchange, we prioritize the safety and security of all our Customers performing any transaction on our exchange. Note the following tips on how to stay protected online and some red flags to better determine if you are being frauded.
- Make sure you have full access to any financial account or login, you should always have the email, password and Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) enabled for any account your name is attached to.
- Use complex passwords that are unique to your CoinSmart account. As an added security measure, we recommend changing your password every 3 months and never saving your password on your computer. If you have a shared computer or device make sure password saving is turned off.
- Never click on links or attachments that are sent to you from an email account you don’t recognize. Also, don’t share personal information with someone you don’t know.
- Avoid clicking pop-ups as these may unintentionally download malware or spyware to your computer. If you click on a pop-up, disconnect your computer from the internet right away. Do not engage in any online tech support as they may be complicit in the scam.
- If an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is. Scammers often present themselves as brokers or traders who can get clients a big return on their investment.
- Never send cryptocurrency to a wallet you do not have access to. If it’s not your key, it’s not your cryptocurrency.
- Be wary of invites from “Investment Clubs” on Telegram, Signal or Whatsapp. Always reach out to the company or firm to confirm if they have an online presence.
- Never install any applications that allow remote control of your devices. This is how scams will compromise your wallets to steal your crypto.
If you suspect that you may have fallen victim to fraud - we would recommend you immediately follow the steps outlined below for your security purposes:
1) Change of Passwords - We would recommend you change all your passwords on your CoinSmart login after we have fully unlocked your CoinSmart Account. We also recommend changing your passwords on your e-mail & banking sites as well.
2) Reach out to Support – We will take the necessary actions to report potential fraud/scams to FINTRAC. For your added safety measure, you can also report this incident to your local authorities.
3) Enabling Your 2-Factor-Authentication - Concerning your logins, we highly recommend enabling your 2-Factor-Authentication across all logins you may have. Here's some more info on how to set up 2FA on your CoinSmart account.
4) Antivirus Scanning & Software Management - We also recommend running antivirus software & uninstalling any software you may have been asked to install. This includes turning off password saving across all your browsers.
